Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oredo Federal Constituency have reportedly thrown their weight behind former Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, ahead of the party’s House of Representatives primaries.
Party sources disclosed that consultations among stakeholders in the constituency pointed to growing support for Iyamu as the preferred candidate to fly the APC flag in the 2027 general elections.
The development, however, reportedly sparked disagreement among supporters of another aspirant, Hon. Osaro Obazee, who is also seeking the party’s ticket.
Sources familiar with the meetings said some party leaders argued that the contest should remain open, while others insisted that Iyamu possessed the political structure, grassroots support and influence needed to strengthen the party’s chances in the constituency.
A senior APC member in Oredo, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said party leaders considered Iyamu’s contributions to the APC and his performance during the 2024 governorship election before backing his aspiration.
“Paddy Iyamu currently enjoys massive grassroots support across Oredo. Anywhere he goes, people troop out in large numbers in what many of us see as an organic demonstration of acceptance and popularity,” the source said.
“He also distinguished himself during the 2024 governorship election by delivering his ward for Governor Monday Okpebholo.”
Meanwhile, indications have also emerged that the incumbent lawmaker representing Uhunmwode/Orhionmwon Federal Constituency, Hon. Billy Osawaru, may secure the APC ticket for a second term.
Osawaru is currently facing opposition from former Edo State Commissioner, Hon. Washington Osifo, who is reportedly interested in contesting for the seat on the APC platform.
However, party insiders said top APC leaders in the state recently held consultations with stakeholders from the constituency and resolved to support Osawaru’s re-election bid.
Sources at the meeting said party leaders considered retaining the incumbent lawmaker necessary to preserve party unity and maintain existing political structures within the constituency.
The latest developments come as political consultations and alignments continue within the Edo APC ahead of the party primaries for the 2027 elections.
