Appeal Court Clears Gov Obaseki Of Certificate Forgery Case

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has dismissed the certificate forgery case filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State.

APC and one of its chieftains from Edo State had approached the court seeking the disqualification of Obaseki on the basis that the bachelor degree filled on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) form in the 2019 governorship election was forged.

But the Appeal Court in a unanimous judgement on Thursday dismissed the APC suit for lack of merit.

The judgement of the three-man panel justices headed by Justice Stephen Adah upheld the decision of the January 9 Abuja Federal High Court which affirmed that Obaseki’s University of Ibadan degree certificate is authentic.

The court ruled that the appellants failed to prove their case against Obaseki thus it was dismissed in its entirety.

It, however, fined the appellants N250,000 for damages in favour of the Edo governor who won the 2019 governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
