Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday formally joined the African Democratic Congress, signalling his long-anticipated realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku announced his defection in a post on his X handle, where he shared a photograph of himself holding his ADC membership card with the terse caption: “It’s official.”
The move comes barely weeks after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, ending a long-running association with the party under which he contested the 2023 presidential election.
His exit from the PDP followed months of internal wrangling and came just two weeks after a coalition of opposition figures adopted the ADC as their political platform for the 2027 presidential race.
Atiku had, in a letter dated July 16 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, cited irreconcilable differences and a departure of the party from its founding ethos as reasons for his resignation.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the former Vice President wrote.
He also used the letter to express gratitude to the PDP for what he described as years of support and opportunities.
“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support,” he added.
