
Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and CNL, has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to education with its participation in the award ceremony of the 2025 Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition, held at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre, Effurun, Delta State.
The event attracted officials of the Delta State Ministry of Education, representatives of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), dignitaries from the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) and PTI, alongside teachers, students and members of the press.
Speaking through a representative, the Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Jim Swartz, highlighted the enduring partnership between the NNPCL/CNL Joint Venture, the Chemical Society of Nigeria and the Delta State Government, describing the competition as a vital platform for promoting academic excellence and strengthening science education in the state.
“We are delighted to witness the sustained commitment to the study of chemistry, as demonstrated by the outstanding performance of students in this year’s competition,” Swartz said.
“Chevron, through the NNPCL/CNL JV, remains proud to be the sole sponsor of the Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition in Delta State since 1992.”
He added that Chevron’s continued investment in education was inspired by the success stories of past beneficiaries.
“Our investment in education is motivated by the remarkable achievements of past awardees, many of whom have excelled in science-related disciplines both locally and internationally,” he stated.
The high point of the ceremony was the presentation of plaques, certificates and other incentives to outstanding students. The overall first prize was won by Omazuwa Enousakhala Samuel of St. Augustine College, Oghara, who emerged top among participants drawn from across Delta State.
Chevron’s unwavering support for education drew commendation from several speakers during the event, with goodwill messages applauding the company for its consistency and impact on science education over the years.
The company noted that its educational initiatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Nigerian National Policy on Education. Through scholarships, infrastructure support and manpower development programmes, Chevron said it remains committed to fostering self-worth, societal advancement and sustainable development.
