Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Ede Dafinone, has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Pan–Niger Delta leader, Chief Godwin Ogbetuo, as he clocked 96 years, describing him as a “rare moral compass” whose life has been devoted to justice, service and good governance.
In a congratulatory statement issued on Saturday, Dafinone said the 96th birthday of the nonagenarian was not only a personal milestone but “a celebration of a life of principle and unwavering commitment to the common good of Delta State, the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.”
“On behalf of the great people of Delta Central, I heartily felicitate with an elder statesman of rare distinction, Chief Godwin Ogbetuo, as he marks his 96th birth anniversary,” the senator said.
He recalled Ogbetuo’s critical role at the dawn of the current democratic dispensation, noting that as former Chairman of the Delta State Elders and Leaders Forum, the nonagenarian provided guidance and moral direction at a defining moment in the state’s political history.
“Chief Ogbetuo stands tall as a respected Pan–Niger Delta leader and a steadfast advocate of accountable leadership. Working alongside other eminent elders and closely with the late Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, he helped shape critical interventions that strengthened democratic culture and responsible governance in our state,” Dafinone stated.
The lawmaker said even at 96, Ogbetuo continues to inspire with “uncommon wisdom, courage and an uncompromising stand against corruption,” adding that his forthrightness and consistency have earned him enduring respect across generations.
“He never hesitated to speak truth to power in defence of the common good,” Dafinone said.
Praying for the elder statesman, the senator said, “On this auspicious occasion, I pray that Almighty God grants Chief Godwin Ogbetuo continued strength, sound health and peace of mind. May his wealth of experience and counsel remain a source of inspiration and guidance to leaders and the younger generation.”
Chief Ogbetuo is widely regarded as one of the moral voices of the Niger Delta, known for his principled interventions in public affairs and his lifelong advocacy for justice, equity and accountable governance.
