Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Ede Dafinone, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident involving the Ujevwu-Itakpe Train Service near Agbor, Delta State, which claimed four lives on Monday.
The lawmaker described the incident as a devastating tragedy and called for an immediate and comprehensive review of safety measures across the nation’s railway system to prevent future occurrences.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dafinone extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathised with passengers who sustained injuries in the crash.
“I received with deep sorrow the news of the tragic accident involving the Ujevwu–Itakpe Train Service near Agbor, Delta State. My heartfelt condolences go to the families of those who lost their lives in this devastating incident. I also sympathise with the injured and pray for their speedy recovery,” he said.
While noting that the Nigerian Railway Corporation had confirmed that three persons died in the accident and that all passengers had been accounted for, the senator stressed that every life lost was a painful reminder of the need to strengthen safety standards in public transportation.
According to him, the tragedy has left families grieving and survivors battling emotional trauma, adding that Nigerians must stand united in support of those affected.
Dafinone commended the swift intervention of the Delta State Government, emergency responders, security agencies, medical personnel, railway officials, and volunteers whose efforts helped rescue passengers and provide critical assistance at the scene.
He, however, warned that the accident underscored the urgent need to prioritise the safety of rail commuters across the country.
“The Ujevwu–Itakpe rail corridor is a vital national asset, serving thousands of passengers and supporting economic activities across several states. Its continued success depends on both operational efficiency and public confidence in its safety,” he stated.
The senator called for a thorough, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, insisting that the probe must uncover the immediate and underlying causes of the accident.
He said the inquiry should identify any operational or technical lapses and recommend concrete measures to prevent a recurrence.
“The affected families deserve answers, and the public deserves reassurance that every lesson from this tragedy will be acted upon,” Dafinone added.
He further urged the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Nigerian Railway Corporation, and relevant safety agencies to conduct a comprehensive review of operational and safety protocols along the Warri–Itakpe corridor and across the national rail network.
According to him, regular maintenance of rail infrastructure, strict adherence to safety regulations, and enhanced emergency preparedness are critical to safeguarding lives.
Dafinone also called for adequate medical care, counselling, and support for injured passengers and bereaved families to ease their suffering and aid recovery.
The senator prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for strength and comfort for all those affected by the tragedy.
