Gov Oborevwori, Aniagwu Mourn As Delta Journalist , Vivian Nkechika, Dies From Gas Explosion

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed profound grief over the passing of a Delta State journalist and staff of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba, Miss Vivian Nkechika, who reportedly passed on after a domestic gas explosion at her home.

The Governor described the deceased’s passage as a devastating blow to the journalism profession and society at large.

 

Miss Nkechika, an indigene of Ekwuoma in Ika North East Local Government Area, served as an Assistant Manager in the Programmes Department of DBS Asaba.

 

She reportedly passed on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, following complications from a domestic gas explosion at her residence in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

 

In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family, the management and staff of DBS Asaba, media practitioners across the state, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council.

Oborevwori said: “This is a moment of deep sadness. Delta State has lost a vibrant and principled media practitioner whose voice contributed immensely to informing and enlightening the public.

 

“Her sudden departure is a profound loss to her family, the media fraternity, and all who value credible journalism.”

 

Governor Oborevwori prayed for divine strength for her family, friends, and colleagues to endure the painful loss, while also asking God to grant eternal rest to her soul.

 

“Our hearts go out to all who mourn her passing. May God comfort everyone she left behind and grant her eternal peace,” he said.

 

Similarly, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, also has expressed deep regret over the incident, noting that Vivian Nkechika’s passing is a devastating blow to the ministry of information and journalism profession.

 

Aniagwu in a condolence message on Thursday, commiserated with the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba, and members of the Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over the passing of the broadcaster.

The information commissioner noted that the late Nkechika was a consummate professional whose distinctive voice, dedication and commitment to ethical journalism left an indelible mark on broadcasting in Delta State.

 

According to Aniagwu, the news of her passing came as a rude shock, especially at a time when her wealth of experience, guidance and mentorship were still greatly needed in the media space.

 

The Commissioner described the late broadcaster as a disciplined, hardworking and passionate media practitioner who upheld the core values of journalism and contributed immensely to public enlightenment and societal development.

 

Aniagwu further prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of Vivian Nkechika, urging her colleagues to sustain the legacy of professionalism, integrity and excellence which she stood for throughout her career.
