Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, will on September 1, 2026, host Ijaw leaders and stakeholders of the Ijaw National Congress at a Mega Unity Reception aimed at consolidating the ongoing reconciliation process within the socio-cultural organisation.
According to a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, explained that the event is aimed at resetting the Ijaw National Congress and strengthening unity within the Ijaw nation.
The event, scheduled to hold at the Ijaw House, Yenagoa, is expected to bring together major stakeholders of the INC and other prominent Ijaw leaders from across the Niger Delta states.
The initiative followed the constitution of an INC reconciliation committee by Governor Diri on May 26 as part of efforts to resolve differences within the organisation and restore unity among its members.
The committee was chaired by a former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Dr. Mathew Seiyefa.
Other members included former Rivers State Deputy Governor, Sir Gabriel Toby; former Minister of Police Affairs, Alaowei Brodrick Bozimo; former INC President, Chief Joshua Fumudoh; National Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Dr. Boladei Igali; and King Goddy Idaminabo.
Dr. Kingsley Kuku and Chief Patrick Erasmus served as heads of the committee’s secretariat.
The committee, after engaging aggrieved parties and other stakeholders, submitted its report about a month after its inauguration.
The September 1 gathering is expected to build on the committee’s reconciliation efforts and provide a platform for Ijaw leaders to work towards a fresh understanding within the INC.
Governor Diri, who is widely referred to as the Governor-General of the Ijaw Nation, has continued to advocate greater unity among Ijaw leaders and stakeholders.
