Confusion and grief swept across Nollywood on Tuesday following reports that popular actor, Alexx Ekubo, had died at the age of 40.
The reports gained traction after some of the actor’s colleagues, including actress Funke Akindele, actor Bolanle Ninalowo and Godwin Nnadiekwe, posted emotional tributes on social media.
Sharing on her Instagram story, Akindele wrote, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best.
“May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. ‘Ore mi’ like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.”
Ninalowo, who is currently in the United States, also mourned the actor on his Instagram page.
“Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all,” he wrote.
Reacting to the development, actor Godwin Nnadiekwe described the news as heartbreaking.
“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, Ekubo’s family had yet to officially confirm the reports.
The development comes months after concerns mounted over the actor’s wellbeing following his prolonged absence from social media.
The light-skinned movie star had stayed away from Instagram since December 30, 2024, sparking speculations among fans.
A recent viral video showing Ekubo interacting with children further triggered emotional reactions online, as many fans observed that the actor appeared noticeably slimmer and subdued.
Before the reports of his death surfaced, Ekubo had repeatedly dismissed public concerns over his marital status, insisting that he was more focused on making money and building his acting career.
His failed relationship with US-based model, Fancy Acholonu, also remained one of the most talked-about celebrity breakups in recent years.
Acholonu had called off their wedding in 2021 before later publicly apologising to the actor and reaffirming her love for him.
