A book chronicling the latest laws and policy development in the Nigerian oil, gas and environmental sector has been slated for a launch on Friday June 6, 2025 in Uvwie, Delta State.
The book titled “Oil, Gas and Environmental Law in Nigeria”, was written by Pastor Tareri Avwomakpa PhD, a law lecturer and a pastor with Christ Missionaries Crusaders Church with headquarters at Ekpan in Uvwie.
Dr. Avwomakpa, in a statement announcing arrangements for the book launch on Wednesday, said the ceremony would be held at Kanewood Hotel along Jakpa Road, Ekpan, in Uvwie, Delta State.
The ceremony which is expected to commence at 1pm has Delta Governor , Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa are distinguished guests of honour at the book launch.
Executive Director, Projects, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Olorogun Ebenezer Okorodudu PhD, and Chairman of Gbagi Business Conglomerate, Olorogun Emuobo Gbagi, would serve as chairman and co-chairman of the event, while the House of Representatives’ member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South and Udu Federal Constituency, Rev. Ejiroghene Francis Waive; his counterpart from Okpe, Sapele and Uvwie Federal Constituency, Hon. Ben Etanabene and Principal/Chief Executive Officer of Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Dr. Samuel Onoji are special guests of honour.
Pastor Avwomakpa, according to the statement, said the book was written from the Niger Delta perspective in view of recent development in the oil and gas sector, and would serve as a legal guide for leadership of oil and gas bearing communities particularly in Niger Delta.
The book, reviewed by one of Nigerian brightest legal minds and former Deputy Director, Nigerian Law School, Prof. Festus Emiri SAN, captured the Nigerian Petroleum Industry Act, 2021, as it affects the people of the oil-rich Niger Delta and its implications.
Renowned constitutional lawyer, Prof. Mike Ozekhome SAN, wrote the Forward to the book, where described the book as one of the most practical books written from the Niger Delta perspective in recent times.
Other prominent Nigerians including Archbishop God-Do-Well Avwomakpa, Archbishop Solomon Gbakara, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole SAN, lawyers and others are expected to attend the ceremony.
“The book contains issues of the operations, structure, governance institutions, pollution, civil and criminal liabilities in cases of pollution, compensation, issues of petroleum host communities and other issues under the new regime of the Petroleum Industry Act and the Regulations made pursuant to the PIA.
“The book is relevant to host communities, operators of the oils and gas industry both government and private oil and gas businesses, policy makers, and oil producing states.
“It also contains perspectives of a researcher from the Niger Delta with first hand experience of the issues discussed. It is also relevant to students, because it contains major issues in the Nigerian curriculum of petroleum and Environmental Law”, the statement.
The book’s launch also coincided with Pastor Avwomakpa’s 5th priestly ordination as priest with Christ Missionaries Crusaders Church.
Avwomakpa, a former Senior Special Assistant to former Governor Okowa, was a law lecturer at the Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Micheal and Cecilia Ibru University, Agbarha-Otor and Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State; Master of Laws from University Pretoria, South Africa; and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Petroleum and Environmental Law from Niger Delta University.
The author also holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education from University of Benin and Diploma in Theology from Christ the Rock Bible College. He was the best graduating law student during his undergraduate studies at Niger Delta University.
