The Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, citing rising security threats linked to the misuse of darkened vehicle windows.
The Force said the renewed clampdown, which takes effect from January 2, 2026, became unavoidable following a spike in crimes carried out with vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
According to a statement on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, alleged that criminal gangs have increasingly exploited tinted windows to hide identities and execute crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent offences, posing grave danger to public safety.
The Force clarified that contrary to public speculation, no court order ever restrained the police from enforcing the tinted glass law. It explained that enforcement was earlier suspended purely as a goodwill gesture to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documents without pressure.
“With emerging security concerns, the need to protect lives and property has become urgent,” the police said, stressing that the decision to resume enforcement was taken after careful review of the prevailing security situation.
Hundeyin maintained that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the exercise would be conducted professionally, lawfully and with respect for citizens’ rights.
He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety and the rule of law.
The police advised motorists who genuinely require tinted glass to obtain the necessary permits through approved channels and ensure full compliance with the law before the enforcement date.
