The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has strongly opposed the ongoing impeachment moves against Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the development as unfortunate and capable of destabilising the state.

The party made its position known in a statement signed by its State Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, following the latest developments from the Rivers State House of Assembly.

While acknowledging the independence of the legislature and its constitutional role of checks and balances, the APC said it “solemnly rejects” the resort to impeachment, warning that internal political disputes must not be allowed to threaten governance and stability in the state.

“It will be totally untenable for our party to keep quiet when an obvious hangover from strifes that occurred within the PDP are allowed to resurface in our great party,” the statement read.

The party noted that the impeachment threat was reportedly linked to the 2025 budget, stressing that there was no constitutional basis for such action.

According to the APC, during the period of emergency rule, a budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu in May 2025, approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and subsequently by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, with a total sum of N1.485tn.

The party explained that the budget, which runs for one year until August 2026, remains valid, adding that the governor could choose not to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with its provisions. It also cited constitutional provisions that allow governors to operate within a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.

The Rivers APC therefore urged members of the State House of Assembly, particularly those elected on the platform of the party, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the government.

“We will do everything possible to ensure that the Government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilised through fratricidal disagreements,” the party stated.

It called on lawmakers to immediately discontinue the impeachment process, warning that it could tarnish the image of the party and stall the pace of development in the state.
