Uwheru Attacks: NEMA Distributes Relief Materials To Delta Community

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed relief materials to victims of herdsmen attacks in Uwheru Kingdom in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The relief is coming months after the House of Representatives through a motion by the member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South and Udu Federal Constituency, Rev Francis Ejiroghene Waive, seeking support for members of affected communities.

Suspected herdsmen had in February launched repeated attacks on Uwheru communities where no fewer than ten persons from Agadama, Avwon, Agadama, Ohoro communities were gruesomely murdered by the herders.

But presenting the materials to the affected communities, Director General of NEMA, Mohammadu Mohammad, commiserated with the people of the area over the attacks, saying the donation was to alleviate the suffering caused during the incident.

Mohammad, represented by NEMA’s senior official, Mr Ifeanyi Omeje, said the relief materials came following a motion sponsored by Rev Waive on the floor of the House of Representatives alerting the NEMA’s authorities to the plight of the victims.

The NEMA boss while presenting the materials to leadership of the affected communities at Agadama Primary School, urged the people to make judicious use of the items.

Also speaking during the brief ceremony, Rev Waive called on the people of the area to sustain the prevailing peace.

The federal lawmaker posited that, “When the herdsmen attack happened, I moved a motion on the floor of the House drawing the attention of the federal government to the situation, calling for relief materials as well as an investigation of the causes of the incessant attacks.

“Thereafter, I followed up with the relevant agencies of the federal government with a view of seeing the actualization of all the prayers of my motion. I am glad that the NEMA has responded by providing these relief materials to persons affected by the attacks.”

The relief materials distributed by NEMA

He enjoyed the community leaders to be fair in the distribution of the items while assuring them that Government is working to ensure that herders’ attacks do not reoccur.

“I urge the community leaders to remain peaceful and united as they’ve been since the unfortunate incident even as distribution is made of these items today.

“Our attention is now shifted to the onerous task of ensuring attacks do not occur anymore.

“I call on all Nigerians to give peace a chance as no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of violence.”

Items presented include; 257 bags of rice, 257 bags of garri, 257 bags of beans, 30 kegs of vegetable oil, 30 cartons of tomatoes paste and 514 pieces of blankets.

Others are; 600 bags of cement, 600 bundles of roofing sheets, 170 packets of zinc nails and 514 pieces of mattresses, 771 pieces of mosquito net, 257 pieces of guinea brocade and 257 pieces of wax print.

Meanwhile, Uwheru Council Chief led Chief Peter Okigbe thanked Rev Waive and the Federal Government for the donation relief items.
