The Nigerian Army on Friday says claims by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State alleging that operatives of the 6 Division Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, are planning to assassinate him were false and blackmail against its men.

The Nigerian Army described the allegation in an alleged failed plot to assassinate the former governor on Thursday night as “Lies, cheap blackmail” aimed to score cheap political points.

Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Division, in response to the governor’s allegations yesterday said, “The political atmosphere has reached crescendo with key actors outwitting each other. Most worrisome is the activities of some who find pleasure in maligning the NA.

“The NA has over time reiterated and demonstrated its apolitical posture and professional responsibility in line with the Chief of Army Staff constant directive. The 6 Division over the politically motivated allegations against it in the last one week, is compelled to warn mischief makers to stay clear of the NA.
