Senator Ede Dafinone has congratulated 16-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson for making history as the first Nigerian to win gold in the Men’s Under-23 Epee event at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos.
Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District in the Senate, described the teenager’s triumph as a landmark achievement for Nigerian sports and a moment of immense pride for Delta State and the Urhobo nation.
In a statement, Dafinone said Oghenegaren’s feat was particularly remarkable given his age and the quality of opposition he overcame on his way to the title.
The young fencer went unbeaten in the pool stages before defeating opponents from South Africa and India. He secured a hard-fought 15–11 victory over India’s Ashwini Shaurya in the semi-final, before producing a commanding 15–5 win over Asian champion Lokesh Verma in the final.
Dafinone said the performance demonstrated the youngster’s “remarkable composure, discipline and determination,” adding that Oghenegaren had achieved what no Nigerian had done before.
“This is a historic moment for Nigerian sport and a proud moment for Delta State,” Dafinone said.
The senator also highlighted Oghenegaren’s decision to represent Nigeria after previously competing for England, describing it as a powerful demonstration of patriotism and pride in his Nigerian heritage.
According to him, the decision should inspire young Nigerians to believe in their abilities and pursue excellence wherever their talents take them.
Dafinone further commended Oghenegaren’s parents, coaches and support team for nurturing his talent and supporting him throughout his journey.
“Behind every champion is a network of people who believed before the world took notice,” he said.
The senator urged the teenage champion to see the Commonwealth gold as only the beginning of a bigger journey, expressing confidence that he would achieve greater heights and bring further honour to Delta State and Nigeria.
“To Oghenegaren, I say: this is only the beginning. I am confident that you will achieve even greater heights and bring more honour to Delta State and Nigeria. You have made us proud, and you can count on my continued support,” Dafinone said.
