Daily Times reporter injured as hoodlums invade journalist’s birthday party

Suspected hoodlums have invaded a birthday bash organised by practising Journalists in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital, for their colleague, leaving the State Correspondent of the Daily Times Newspaper, James Akam severely injured in the process.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Friday night at the popular Club Axter along Yeneze-gene road in the state capital.

The armed youths numbering three were said to have been led by an aspirant who lost in the recently concluded primaries of one of the political parties into the State Assembly for constituency three of Nembe Local Government Area (name withheld).

The birthday party was organised for a popular journalist with the New Waves Newspaper.

One of the journalists who witnessed the melee told WARRI TODAY that their attackers were armed with dangerous objects including bottles.

WARRI TODAY gathered that the chairman of the Bayelsa State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Samuel Numenegi, was present when the incident took place.

It was further learnt that security personnel and owner of the lounge were, however, compelled by the angry journalists to arrest the hoodlums.

Some angry journalists however questioned the security arrangement put in place by the management of the popular lounge.

A police source at the Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying that investigation into the matter had commenced.
