Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has slammed popular rapper, Erigga, over what he described as ‘hate’ on musicians from wealthy backgrounds.
Erigga, whose real name is Erhiga Agarivbie, had taken to X to salute artistes who did not come from wealthy families and had to work hard for every dollar they earned.
He wrote, “Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn.”
But Davido, reacting to the post, tackled the rapper, accusing him of pushing unnecessary motivation and hate against musicians from wealthy family.
“I was not the one who asked your father not to be wealthy. Shoutout to the ones that came from a family money who still grind to the top. Leave here with your nonsense motivation…imbecile”, Davido wrote on X.
Erigga responded by questioning why someone from a wealthy background would take offence at a message directed at people who struggled financially.
He wrote, “Big man Pikin dey cry say poor men children de hail dem self ??? Motivate yourself self naw Ambassador of RICH KIDS.”
The exchange has since generated reactions from social media users, with some defending Erigga and others backing Davido.
An X user, Moses5_a, described Erigga’s original post as harmless, saying the rapper was known for motivational messages.
“This tweet is so harmless. I don’t know why people are crying over it. He clearly wasn’t shading anyone but somehow someone got offended. If you follow Erigga way back from 2020, you will know he’s all about motivation,” the user wrote.
Another user, NurseVictoria01, criticised Erigga, arguing that coming from a wealthy family should not be portrayed negatively.
“There’s no award or glory for suffering. When are you ever going to act your age? Stop throwing unintelligent shade. No one stopped your ancestors or your father from securing the bag. You can chase X money without hating on the rich,” the user stated.
The exchange has reignited discussions on wealth, privilege, struggle and hard work in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
