The Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has announced plans to host its 117th Inaugural Lecture, with a focus on the evolution and relevance of modern Nigerian literature.
The lecture, titled “The Literature of Our State: An Evolutionary Engagement with Modern Nigerian Literature,” will be delivered by Professor Sunny Ijirhevwe Awhefeada, a renowned scholar and Professor of African Literature.
The event is scheduled to hold on Thursday, January 15, 2026, by 11am at the 750 Lecture Theatre A, Site III, Delta State University, Abraka, with guests expected to be seated by 10.30am.
According to a statement, the lecture will be held under the distinguished chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba, who is also hosting the event on behalf of the University Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff and students.
Professor Awhefeada, an accomplished academic, holds a PhD and MA from the University of Ibadan and a BA from the University of Benin, and is widely respected for his contributions to African and Nigerian literary studies.
The inaugural lecture is expected to provide critical insights into the growth, transformation and contemporary relevance of literature within the Nigerian socio-cultural context, particularly as it relates to state and national identity.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Asagba, described the lecture series as a cornerstone of the university’s academic tradition, noting that it reflects DELSU’s commitment to intellectual excellence, research advancement and cultural scholarship.
The event will be coordinated by the Chairman, Ceremonials, Professor Enajite Ojaruega, with members of the academic community, literary scholars, students and the general public expected to attend.
The university urged invited guests to arrive early and to be seated by 10:30am in order to ensure a smooth and timely commencement of the lecture.
