A popular politician and two others have been arrested in connection with the death of the 24-year-old girl found in a popular hotel around the Amukpe Area of Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the suspects including the politician (name withheld) were arrested in the ongoing investigation into the death of the girl simply identified as Abina by the operatives of the Delta State Police Command in Sapele.

WARRI TODAY had reported that the decomposing body of the deceased, believed to be a sex worker, was discovered under the hotel bed last week Monday by one of the hotel cleaners after being declared missing for about three days.

Sources told our correspondent that the politician was allegedly arrested in Abuja by crack team of the Police in Sapele Area Command.

The politician was said to have led the police team to Benin where two other suspects, a mechanic and his girlfriend, were arrested.

Disclosing the details of the arrest, police source said, “We got him through his phone number that took us to Abuja where we apprehended him and from there we brought him back to Delta.

“The politician is currently helping us with investigation towards unraveling the true cause of the incident. We are detaining him at the Sapele Area Command, and we shall transfer the case to Asaba (State Police Command) once we are done for prosecution.”

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the arrest of the politician to WARRI TODAY.

Onovwakpoyeya, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), however, could not confirm if the arrested suspect was a politician.

“We have arrest one of the suspects in connection with the death of the girl at the Sapele hotel. What I can’t confirm to you is whether the suspect is a politician”, she added.

However, a senior police officer at the Sapele Area Command confirmed that the suspect is a notable politician in Sapele and Warri North Local Government Area.

The suspected politician was said to have vied for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Warri North into the Delta State House of Assembly.
