Chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Olorogun John Nani, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what he described as a strategic and thoughtful show of respect for traditional institutions through the presentation of 65 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to traditional rulers across the state.

Reacting to the governor’s gesture, Nani said the move reflects a clear understanding of the pivotal role traditional rulers play in complementing government efforts, especially at the grassroots where peace, stability and community trust are critical to development.

According to him, the Oborevwori administration has consistently treated traditional rulers as indispensable partners in governance, rather than ceremonial figures.

“The Governor has once again shown that he understands governance beyond policy statements. By empowering traditional rulers with tools that enhance their mobility and effectiveness, he is strengthening the very foundation of grassroots administration,” Nani said.

He noted that royal fathers often serve as the first point of contact between government and local communities, adding that their roles in conflict resolution, community mobilisation and support for security initiatives frequently determine the success of government programmes.

Describing the SUVs as a practical intervention, Nani stressed that many monarchs operate in rural and riverine communities with difficult terrains, where mobility remains a major challenge.

“This is not about luxury. It is about functionality and service delivery. When traditional rulers are well supported, governance becomes easier, faster and more responsive to the needs of the people,” he stated.

The DESOPADEC chairman further aligned the governor’s action with the MORE Agenda, saying the gesture speaks to inclusive governance and fairness, particularly in recognising institutions that contribute quietly but consistently to peace and development.

He said stakeholders in oil-producing and riverine communities—where DESOPADEC operates—have continued to benefit from the stabilising influence of traditional rulers, stressing that sustained collaboration between government and the traditional institution remains vital to development.

Nani also praised Governor Oborevwori for maintaining a respectful and non-confrontational relationship with monarchs, noting that this approach has helped sustain peace across Delta State.

“Governor Oborevwori’s leadership style is built on respect, consultation and empathy. His relationship with traditional rulers has paid dividends in stability and cooperation, and this gesture will further cement that bond,” he added.
