The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has restated its commitment to supporting physically challenged persons in its mandate areas with the distribution of mobility aids and assistive devices.
The Executive Director, Finance and Administration of the commission, Oghenekome Reginald Okpobor, gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of physically challenged persons at the commission’s headquarters.
Okpobor, who spoke on behalf of the board, thanked the group for their engagement and assured them of the commission’s readiness to address their needs.
“We appreciate you for coming and sharing your concerns. Our doors remain open. Under the leadership of Sheriff Oborevwori, we are doing our best to serve the people,” he said.
He added that the commission remained committed to keeping its promises and sustaining collaboration with the group.
A representative of the delegation commended the commission’s leadership for its inclusive approach, noting that physically challenged persons make up a significant voting population in the state.
Another member, Comrade Obruche, praised the board for its friendly disposition towards persons with disabilities and called for stricter implementation of the Disability Act, particularly in ensuring accessibility in public infrastructure.
Highlights of the event included the distribution of assistive devices to beneficiaries, including six artificial limbs, 25 wheelchairs, 35 armpit crutches, 35 elbow crutches, 10 hearing aids, and 32 guide canes for the visually impaired.
The gesture, according to beneficiaries, has brought relief and renewed hope to many across oil-producing communities in the state.
