 At least 100 houses have been destroyed and 300 persons displaced in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, following a downpour which resulted in flooding in the area.

It was gathered that the rain which started about 3am on Sunday and ended at about 12noon destroying many property and submerged large section of the metropolis.

A resident of Eket who simply identified himself as Umoetuk said areas mostly affected include Grace Bill, Marina Junction and Udoh Umoh.

He said “the rain started lightly and after some time it became very heavy and the following morning we saw some houses submerged and properties destroyed.”

Another resident, Sam Abia said the flooding was a normal occurrence adding when it rains for two hours the whole area around Grace Bill will be usually flooded.

“Flooding around Grace Bill is a normal sight when it rains for two hours the whole area and the Grace Bill road would be flooded” he said.

A worker with the Eket Local government who spoke on condition of anonymity called on the council chairman, Frank Archibong, and Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel, to come to the aid of the people by constructing a drainage system to address the menace.

“This is a yearly occurrence and we are appealing to the chairman of Eket and our Governor who is from this senatorial district to address this problem once and for all by constructing a drainage system to tackle the problem.”
