Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the decision of his son, Abba Abubakar, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a personal choice and does not reflect his own political position.
Atiku, in a terse statement on Wednesday, said political differences within families are normal in a democracy, stressing that he neither interferes with the conscience of his children nor imposes his will on Nigerians.
He said, “The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming.”
The former Vice President maintained that his concern is not defections but what he described as the poor governance of the APC and the deepening economic and social hardships confronting Nigerians.
“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians,” he said.
Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to working with like-minded Nigerians to provide an alternative to the ruling party, insisting that the country needs urgent relief from its current challenges.
“I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope and progress,” he added.
