…Tasks Delta Govt On Rising Kidnappings In Agbarho
The Warri Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has warned against fresh unrest in Warri and called on residents of Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo and other ethnic groups to embrace peace and avoid actions capable of sparking another round of crisis.
This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of the chapel’s congress held on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Chief Government Ekpemupolo Press Centre, Warri, Delta State.
The journalists, in a communiqué, signed by the drafting committee led by Sir Jimitota Onoyeme (Chairman), Comrade Elo Edremoda (Secretary), Comrade Onyekachukwu Meluwa (Member) and Elder Dele Oguyemi (Member), also charged their colleagues covering recent agitations in parts of Warri to report responsibly and professionally.
Social media handlers were also advised to refrain from sharing inciting content that could worsen tensions among communities.
The chapel noted that Warri has enjoyed relative peace in recent years, and warned that any return to conflict would roll back the gains recorded so far in security, development and investment.
The Union raised serious concern over the growing cases of child abductions and cult-related clashes in Agbarho town in Delta State, and called on the state government and security agencies in the state to urgently arrest the situation.
“The safety of children and young people in Agbarho is now at risk. We call on security operatives to act swiftly and decisively,” the communiqué warned.
The union commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for ongoing projects across Delta State, especially in Warri, Uvwie, and nearby communities.
The NUJ acknowledged the governor’s commitment to infrastructure, saying the ongoing work is a sign of responsive leadership.
However, the congress urged the state government to accelerate construction work on roads and drainages in preparation for the dry season.
It specifically called for the immediate reconstruction of the Udu Express Junction/ECN Road in Udu and Ughelli south local government areas and repairs on the FUPRE Junction section of the East-West Road, describing both as critical to the free movement of goods and people.
“These roads are lifelines for several communities and local governments. The government must treat them as a top priority,” the union stated.
The congress was attended by senior journalists and correspondents from major national newspapers and broadcast stations operating in Delta State.
