The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has extended warm congratulations to veteran journalist and media icon, Chief Sam Amuka Pemu, as he marks his 90th birthday on Friday (today).
In a heartfelt letter signed by PANDEF’s National Chairman, Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, the Forum described Chief Amuka Pemu as a “trailblazer in the history of journalism in Nigeria” and praised his unwavering dedication to the craft and national development over the decades.
“There is no gainsaying; you are a trailblazer in the history of journalism in Nigeria, a columnist and publisher of the highest repute,” the letter stated. It added, “Your immense contribution to journalism and nation building cannot be overemphasized.”
Chief Amuka-Pemu, affectionately known as “Uncle Sam” in media circles, is the founder of Vanguard Newspapers, one of Nigeria’s leading national dailies. His career spans more than six decades, during which he has become a respected voice in public discourse and a symbol of journalistic integrity.
The Forum highlighted his life as one of “class and sagacity,” noting that he has lived in a way that truly exemplifies the adage, “the pen is mightier than the sword.”
“Indeed, you have led a life worthy of emulation, and have added to this noble calling with sheer class and sagacity”, Prof Igali further stated.
PANDEF offered prayers for continued health and fulfillment in his later years, quoting the biblical passage Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
