Ukpai, who passed on October 6, 2025 at the age of 80, will be laid to rest amid nationwide tributes to his decades-long evangelical ministry.

Speaking during the visit to the family in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Governor Diri described the late cleric as a rare vessel who carried the Gospel beyond city centres into remote communities across Nigeria.

He urged Christian leaders to emulate Ukpai’s style of evangelism by focusing more attention on rural areas rather than concentrating solely on major urban centres.

“Our late Papa Ukpai impacted so many lives through his evangelism and messages. He was a man who went into the interior and villages of our state to preach. He did not confine his preaching to only state capitals,” Diri said.

The governor noted that while cities such as Abuja, Lagos, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, and Benin City** remain critical due to their population density, there is urgent need to intensify missionary work in interior communities, particularly in areas witnessing a resurgence of idol worship.

Diri described the late evangelist as a blessing to Bayelsa State, recalling his several visits and spiritual contributions to communities in the state. He added that Ukpai’s funeral would be a celebration of a fulfilled and impactful life.

On behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, he extended condolences to the widow, Philomina Ukpai, children and the entire family.

Responding, Mrs. Ukpai expressed appreciation to the governor and his entourage for the visit and support shown since her husband’s passing.

She said her husband did not die but was called home by God, recounting a dream he had at age 50 in which he was told he had 30 more years to complete his assignment on earth.
