The Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, has ordered the immediate repair of vandalised components of the First Niger Bridge after an inspection revealed the removal of critical bolts, expansion joints and iron bars from the structure.
Umahi directed the Controller of Works in Anambra State to procure and replace the vandalised bolts immediately, while welding and other remedial works are to commence without delay.
The minister also ordered maintenance and resurfacing works on the bridge, with some activities scheduled to be carried out at night to minimise disruption to motorists.
In a major security measure, Umahi directed the installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras across the bridge to strengthen surveillance and prevent further vandalism.
The CCTV system is expected to be linked to relevant government officials and the police to enable real-time monitoring and rapid response to suspicious activities and acts of vandalism.
The development underscores the Federal Government’s renewed emphasis on protecting critical infrastructure after construction.
Rather than focusing solely on building and rehabilitating roads and bridges, the Works Ministry is also placing greater emphasis on maintenance, security, sustainability and accountability.
The First Niger Bridge remains a critical transportation link in the South-East, making the protection of its structural components essential to the safety of motorists and the continued movement of people and goods.
Umahi’s directive is therefore expected to combine immediate structural repairs with enhanced security measures designed to protect the bridge from further vandalism.
