Warri Rebirth Initiative (WRI) has announced the postponement of its much-anticipated October 1st celebration, citing rising security concerns within parts of Warri South Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Patrick Origho, the executive council of WRI expressed deep regret over the decision, describing it as a painful but necessary step taken in the interest of public safety and peace.
According to the group, its leadership was in the final stages of preparation for the Independence Day celebration when reports emerged of escalating tensions around the Odion Road axis of Warri.
The area, the statement said, witnessed violent disturbances over the weekend of September 25th and 26th, prompting a security review.
“After receiving briefings on the situation, it became clear to the Exco that the possibility of clashes remains a clear and present danger. Further security analysis advised caution and sensitivity to the prevailing atmosphere”, the statement read.
WRI emphasised that while the organization was eager to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day and celebrate Warri’s evolving renaissance, the safety of its members and invited guests must take precedence.
“This decision, taken on the eve of such a symbolic day for our nation and our city, underscores our unwavering commitment to peace. WRI cannot, in good conscience, host a celebration in an atmosphere so clearly charged and volatile,” the statement added.
The organization has urged the public to understand the rationale behind the postponement, stressing that efforts are ongoing—alongside other key stakeholders—to strengthen peace and restore normalcy in affected areas.
It stated, “We remain committed to the vision of a reborn Warri—one built on unity, peace, and progress. We ask for understanding as we continue to do the difficult work behind the scenes to support stability in our communities.”
A new date for the celebration will be announced once the security situation improves.
