Osubi Airport in Delta State has witnessed a dramatic rebound in aviation activities, signalling a major turnaround for the once-quiet facility.
An elder statesman and rights activist, Zik Gbemre, who was at the airport on December 23, 2025, described the atmosphere as vibrant, with frequent landings and take-offs reflecting renewed confidence by airlines and passengers.
Although his flight was delayed, Gbemre noted that it was not cancelled, unlike previous experiences when flight disruptions were common.
He disclosed that within the period he waited to board, about 25 flights landed and departed from Osubi Airport, a development he described as a clear sign of revival.
According to him, information from an inside source revealed that more than 10 airlines are currently operating to and from the airport, a feat he attributed to the combined efforts of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.
While commending the Federal and State Governments for restoring activities at the airport, Gbemre cautioned that the gains could be short-lived if urgent steps were not taken to expand and upgrade the runway.
He warned that without sustainable infrastructure improvements, Osubi Airport could relapse into inactivity after the tenure of the current administration.
“The runway must be expanded and upgraded now to sustain these activities,” he said, stressing that public infrastructure should outlive individuals in office.
Gbemre reiterated that commendation or condemnation should always be based on performance, regardless of personalities involved, and again praised Governor Oborevwori and Minister Keyamo for making Osubi Airport active, while urging decisive action to secure its long-term future.
