The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, in a major political development that could reshape the country’s opposition landscape ahead of the next general election.
The decision was reached on Friday at the maiden national convention of the party and was overwhelmingly adopted by delegates at the gathering.
The motion was moved by Afam Victor Ogene, member representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly.
Delegates at the convention also resolved that after the completion of the single four-year tenure by a southern candidate, the party’s presidential ticket would automatically revert to Northern Nigeria.
The latest resolution is widely seen as a strategic move to attract key southern political figures into the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development has effectively opened the door for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants to contest for the party’s presidential ticket.
More details later.
