A major cultural revival is set to sweep across Delta State as Legacy of Traditions unveils Bini Riva Life, a landmark festival aimed at celebrating the rich history, culture, commerce and livelihoods linked to the historic Benin River.

The festival, scheduled to hold from August 8 to 20 across several riverine communities in Warri North Local Government Area, is expected to attract thousands of visitors, cultural enthusiasts, investors, tourists and community stakeholders from Delta and neighbouring states.

Organisers said the event would spotlight the living heritage of communities stretching from Koko and Oboghoro to Ogheye and other settlements along the Benin River corridor, one of West Africa’s most significant historical trade routes.

The Benin River played a crucial role in regional economic growth for centuries, serving as a major channel for the trade of palm oil, timber, textiles and rubber while linking inland communities to global markets through the Bight of Benin and the Atlantic Ocean.

Speaking on the initiative, the organisers said the festival was designed to preserve cultural heritage while unlocking opportunities in tourism, investment and local enterprise.

“Bini Riva Life is a celebration of the communities, traditions and livelihoods that flow from life around the Benin River.

“The festival evokes the unity and strength of flowing water that sustains diverse peoples and ecosystems. It is both a journey into our past and a platform for building a prosperous future rooted in culture, innovation and collaboration,” they said.

Activities will begin with ‘Neville’s Day’ in Koko from August 8 to 13, commemorating the historic return of the last Governor of the Benin River, Chief Nana Olomu, from British exile.

The opening segment will also feature the Riva Golf Tournament, an art competition and exhibition, as well as heritage activities at the Nana Living History Museum.

The celebrations will gather momentum from August 14 to 16 with events including the Festival Gate, Seafood Market and Festival, Fishing Festival, River Games, Riverside Race, Ogogoro Masters Competition and a media contest focused on photography, drone imaging, social media storytelling and fashion.

One of the major highlights is expected to be the Fishing Festival in Ogheye, where participants will compete for prizes in categories such as biggest fish, largest team catch and widest variety of species harvested from the Benin River and its tributaries.

Visitors will also enjoy an array of fresh, smoked and dried seafood, traditional delicacies, seafood masterclasses, palm wine tastings and indigenous products sourced directly from riverine communities.

The organisers noted that artisans and small-scale businesses would have platforms to showcase products including honey, palm-based goods, clay works, crafts and agro-allied products.

“Beyond the celebrations, Bini Riva Life is a catalyst for economic activity and cultural tourism. We want visitors to experience the beauty, resilience and creativity of riverine communities while creating meaningful opportunities for local producers, artists, entrepreneurs and young people,” the organisers added.

Delegations from neighbouring riverine states, including Bayelsa, Rivers and Ondo, are also expected to participate in the festival.
