In a statement on Monday, Dafinone expressed concern over what he described as the “worrying tone” of political engagement, particularly on social media and other public platforms.

He noted that in the bid to show loyalty to preferred candidates, some youths have resorted to personal attacks and unguarded statements against leaders and fellow citizens.

“This is not who we are as a people. The Urhobo nation is known for its respect, dignity and strong cultural values that uphold honour and mutual regard,” he said.

The lawmaker called for a shift in approach, urging youths to conduct political campaigns with decorum while still expressing their convictions.

“Support your candidates with passion, and where necessary critique opposing views—but always do so with civility and respect,” he advised.

Dafinone warned that political differences must not be allowed to fracture the unity of the Urhobo people.

“Beyond politics, we remain brothers and sisters, bound by a shared heritage and destiny. We must not destroy the bridges we have built over the years,” he added.

He stressed that civility is a mark of strength, not weakness, noting that discipline and restraint are essential traits of responsible leadership.

Reflecting on his own political journey, the senator said he has consistently chosen restraint despite provocations and attacks.

“I have remained committed to these values, refusing to respond to insults in kind because we must embody the principles we seek in society,” he said.

Dafinone further reminded youths that political alignments are fluid, stressing that today’s opponents could become tomorrow’s allies.

“There are no permanent enemies in politics—only shared interests in the progress of our people,” he noted.

He also cautioned against actions that could tarnish the image of the Urhobo nation, urging stakeholders to avoid public disputes capable of bringing disrepute to the collective identity of the people.

“I urge our youths to lead by example—engage responsibly, speak respectfully and act with integrity,” he said.

The senator added that such conduct would not only elevate individuals but also preserve the unity and dignity of the Urhobo nation.

He wished Christians a peaceful Easter celebration, urging them to reflect on the season’s message of renewal, sacrifice and hope.
