Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, on Monday inaugurated a bridge constructed by the member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Oforji Oboku, at Opolo community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.
The governor also approved the construction of a road linking the community to Gloryland Drive, saying the project would further boost socio-economic activities in the area.
Diri commended the federal lawmaker for embarking on what he described as a massive constituency project, noting that it was uncommon for a legislator to execute such a capital-intensive infrastructure.
“It would have taken your full tenure and even more to complete a project like this. I appreciate Honourable Oboku for remembering his people because charity begins at home,” the governor said.
He also appealed to residents of Opolo and neighbouring communities to sustain peace following calls for government intervention in a lingering boundary dispute involving Opolo, Okutukutu and Edepie communities.
“It is good for communities to be at peace. It is also the responsibility of community leaders to maintain peace, and I believe Opolo has good leadership. I urge you to continue to live peacefully,” Diri said.
Earlier, the Paramount Ruler of Opolo Kingdom, HRH Inia Nengibo, Ogbogbo XII, described the bridge as a project that aligns with the state’s urban renewal agenda.
The traditional ruler appealed to the governor to construct a 2.5-kilometre road linking the bridge to the New Yenagoa City, saying it would improve transportation, commerce and security in the community.
In his remarks, Oboku said the bridge was conceived to connect island communities, improve accessibility, enhance security and stimulate economic growth.
He said, “As a young boy, I remember my people praying for a bridge across this creek. Today, I had the privilege to make that dream a reality. My responsibility is not only to make laws but also to attract projects that will improve the lives of my constituents.”
Also speaking, the Senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Konbowei Benson, described the project as a complement to the Diri administration’s infrastructure and urban renewal programme.
He urged residents of Opolo to continue supporting the state government to attract more developmental projects and enjoy the dividends of democracy.
