The Rivers State House Assembly on Friday insisted that the impeachment process against embattled State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu would continue as lawmakers of Ijaw extraction endorsed proceedings.
Speaking on Friday, lawmakers of Ijaw ethnic nationality in the State House of Assembly appealed to the Speaker of the Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, to reopen the Chambers for the impeachment process against Fubara to resume.
Also, four of the lawmakers who had appealed to their colleagues to drop the impeachment proceedings, made a U-turn and pledged their full support against the impeachment of the state governor.
The lawmakers taking turns to speak declared that the Assembly members’ action is strictly constitutional and debunked ethnic colouration to the political crisis in the oil-rich state.
Speaking to journalists, Hon. Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, said they had abandoned their earlier preference for political solutions and were now ready to move ahead with the impeachment of the governor.
The press briefing was held at the conference hall within their residential quarters, where they renewed demands for the continuation of the impeachment exercise against Fubara and his deputy.
The legislators said their decision to proceed was informed by what they described as the governor and his deputy’s refusal to address the constitutional issues contained in the impeachment notice.
