Scores of persons have been reportedly killed following an explosion which rocked a pipeline operated by the Pipeline and Product Marketing Company at Komkom community in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

WARRI TODAY learnt that the explosion occurred on Saturday morning sparking anxiety among residents of the community.

It was gathered that the incident took place when repair works were ongoing on a section of the pipeline.

Sources told our correspondent that about eight persons were killed as a result of the incident while several persons were critically injured.

Another community source disclosed that there was a spill at the site of the ongoing repairs which ignited into explosion some residents rushed down to fetch the spilled product.

“It was the process of fetching the product that resulted in the explosion and causing many casualties. I can’t give exact figure but some persons were killed while others were injured”, our source added.

Although details of the incident were still sketchy at the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, who made the confirmation, said there were casaulties feom the incident.

Omoni said, ”It appeared that there were spills where some residents try to scoop it which led to the explosion. There were casualties but i don’t have the exact figure now. We are already investigating the incident. “
