Nigeria’s First Female Senator, Franca Afegbua, Is Dead


Nigeria’s first female Senator, Franca Hadiza Afegbua, has died.

She died on Sunday, 12 March, 2023 at the age of 79.

He death has thrown the Okpella community in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, into deep mourning.

Senator Afegbua had a stint in the Red Chamber between October and December of 1983, on the platform of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

She represented the Bendel North at the upper legislative house during the ill-fated Second Republic.

Her political career was rudely was cut short by the military coup of 31 December 1983.

Afegbua who trained in Bulgarian, Eastern Europe as a beautician, was married to the late Senator Joseph Tarka, a Tiv from Benue State. .

A family member who pleaded anonymity  confirmed the demise of the deceased political Amazon.

The source further disclosed that funeral details will be announced by the family soon.
