The name Professor (Olorogun) Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri resonates deeply within the academic community in Delta State and far beyond. Though his academic journey was nurtured at Delta State University, Abraka, the rigour of his training, the depth of his scholarship and the breadth of his accomplishments have placed him confidently among academics of global repute.
For decades, Professor Ufuophu-Biri has distinguished himself not merely as a professor, but as a teacher in the truest sense of the word. Thousands of students in Nigeria and abroad have encountered in him a rare academic gift: the ability to transform struggling students into confident, excellent and accomplished scholars. His classroom impact, built over nearly three decades in academia, has earned him the affectionate description of the “perfect teacher” among many of his students.
Yet, to describe Professor Ufuophu-Biri merely as an academic would be to underestimate the remarkable range of his accomplishments. He is an accomplished administrator and resource manager, a journalist, comedian, singer, master of ceremonies, broadcaster, counsellor, cultural enthusiast, tourist, author and astute image maker. He is also a renowned workaholic who approaches every responsibility with uncommon dedication and excellence.
Indeed, one of the most remarkable features of his personality is his refusal to do anything halfway. Whatever assignment he undertakes, he brings to it energy, creativity, discipline and a determination to excel.
Professor Ufuophu-Biri, a Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism, holds a B.A. (Hons) in Mass Communication and a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Labour Relations (MILR) from Delta State University, Abraka.
He proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he obtained an M.A. in Mass Communication with Distinction, before earning a Ph.D. in Communication Arts from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Beyond these qualifications, he has obtained other postgraduate diplomas from universities in Nigeria and abroad, further demonstrating his lifelong commitment to learning, scholarship and professional development.
Born in Owahwa town, headquarters of the Owahwa Ruling House of Ughievwen Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Professor Ufuophu-Biri has spent a significant part of his life building institutions, mentoring young people and contributing to the development of education and society.
As he marks another birthday on August 23, the occasion provides an appropriate moment to celebrate a trailblazer whose accomplishments within the classroom, in administration and in the wider corporate world have often received less attention than they deserve.
One of Professor Ufuophu-Biri’s most significant contributions to academia came during his tenure as Head of the Department of Mass Communication at Delta State University, Abraka. Under his HODship, the department established its M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Mass Communication.
Similarly, he also secured a broadcast licence from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for the department’s FM radio station, strengthening the practical training component of Mass Communication education at the university.
His tenure equally witnessed an important academic milestone. The Department of Mass Communication produced its first set of First Class graduates and subsequently produced the Best Overall Graduating Student in the university, a feat that had not previously been recorded by the department.
It was therefore not surprising that the immediate past Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, recognised Professor Ufuophu-Biri’s administrative and leadership abilities and appointed him to the Governing Council of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara.
The appointment provided another platform for him to demonstrate his capacity for institutional transformation and effective management.
His subsequent emergence as Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, has seen the institution embark on a new phase of development, building on the foundations laid by previous administrations while pursuing new opportunities for growth and relevance.
Under his pragmatic leadership, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) granted the Polytechnic approval to run 16 additional academic programmes and expand the carrying capacity of its existing programmes.
It was a remarkable achievement, particularly because such an expansion had never previously been recorded in the history of the institution.
Professor Ufuophu-Biri has also expanded the infrastructural landscape of the Polytechnic through the construction of additional structures and the equipping of studios and laboratories.
His administration has placed considerable emphasis on academic excellence, practical learning and the deployment of facilities capable of preparing students for the demands of a rapidly changing global economy.
Today, Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, is increasingly positioned as a digitally driven institution and a destination for students seeking practical knowledge and skills relevant to the realities of the modern world.
In line with the vision of the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to provide quality education across state-owned institutions, Professor Ufuophu-Biri has helped expand the Polytechnic’s academic offerings to 46 globally competitive, productive and sustainable programmes.
The achievement has also benefited from the support of the Oborevwori-led administration, whose commitment to education has provided an enabling environment for the institution’s development.
Professor Ufuophu-Biri’s achievements have earned him the admiration of students, staff, members of the host community and regulatory authorities.
Recognising his contributions to the development of the institution and his positive impact on the community, the revered Ovie of Oghara Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Uku Oghara Na Me’ The Orefe III, honoured him in 2025 with a chieftaincy title.
The honour represented not merely recognition of an individual, but acknowledgement of the impact of a scholar whose work has extended beyond the walls of the classroom into institutional administration and community development.
On this natal day, therefore, Professor (Olorogun) Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri deserves to be celebrated as a trailblazing scholar, administrator, communicator, teacher, mentor and institution builder whose contributions continue to resonate across Delta State’s educational landscape.
Today, thousands of his former students and mentees are changing narratives, building careers and contributing to society in different parts of the world. Their accomplishments are, in many ways, part of his enduring legacy.
And perhaps, for a man whose journey has been characterised by continuous growth, this is only another milestone in a story that still has many more chapters to unfold.
As you celebrate another birthday, Professor, I earnestly seek the face of God on your behalf for sound health, greater wisdom, renewed strength and higher responsibilities in the service of Delta State, Nigeria and humanity.
May the years ahead bring greater accomplishments, deeper fulfilment and even more opportunities to deploy your knowledge, experience and influence for the advancement of society.
