The United Kingdom Government has opened applications for the 2026 Chevening Scholarships, offering fully funded master’s degree opportunities to emerging leaders and professionals seeking to study at universities across the UK.
The UK Government, in a statement on Monday, said applications for the prestigious scholarship programme will remain open from August 4 to October 6, 2026.
The scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in partnership with other organisations, is designed for individuals with strong leadership potential, professional achievements and a commitment to driving sustainable development in their home countries.
Successful applicants will receive full financial support to pursue a one-year master’s degree in the United Kingdom while gaining access to world-class education, professional development opportunities and a global network of leaders through the Chevening community.
Head of the Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Emma Hennessey, said the programme is seeking exceptional individuals committed to building a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable world.
According to her, Chevening is particularly interested in applications from under-represented groups as part of its commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion.
“Our scholars and fellows are chosen not only for their achievements, but for their leadership potential, their ability to build meaningful connections, and their commitment to creating lasting impact in their communities and globally,” she said.
Hennessey noted that the programme equips future leaders with the knowledge, networks and international exposure needed to address global challenges through collaboration.
Also speaking, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, described Chevening as more than a scholarship programme, saying it provides scholars with an opportunity to become part of a global network of leaders committed to positive change.
“Chevening is far more than a scholarship to study in the UK. It is an opportunity to join a global network of exceptional leaders committed to creating positive change in their communities and beyond,” Baxter said.
He encouraged qualified Nigerians with a clear vision for making meaningful contributions in areas of shared interest between Nigeria and the United Kingdom to apply for the programme.
Prospective applicants are expected to review the scholarship’s eligibility requirements before submitting their applications through the Chevening online portal.
Established in 1983, the Chevening Scholarship programme has supported more than 60,000 professionals from over 140 countries and territories, with many alumni occupying leadership positions in government, business, academia and civil society across the world.
