In a statement issued on Saturday, the group expressed shock and outrage over the incident, accusing operatives of the Nigeria Police Force of carrying out what it termed a “barbaric” act.

The statement signed by its President, Chief Joseph Abugu, SAN, and General Secretary, Dr. John Uwa, URS said video footage of the incident showed the victim restrained and pleading for his life before he was shot at close range.

“This is not policing; it is state-sanctioned murder,” the group said, insisting that no suspect should be denied the right to a fair hearing.

The organisation stressed that the police have a duty to investigate and arraign suspects in court, not execute them, warning that such actions threaten civil order and democratic principles.

It also called for adequate compensation for the family of the deceased, describing the incident as an avoidable violation of the victim’s right to life.

While acknowledging disciplinary steps reportedly taken by police authorities, including moves against the officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, the group demanded a transparent and expedited trial for all those implicated.

The URS further urged judicial authorities to ensure accountability and called for a broader investigation into circumstances surrounding the incident.

It appealed to residents, particularly youths in Urhobo communities, to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that it would pursue justice through legal means.
