Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has recently congratulated Professor Afekhide Ernest Omoti following his election as the new National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
Okpebholo also urged the Edo-born medical expert to deploy his experience and leadership capacity toward strengthening the association and advancing healthcare delivery in the country.
The governor stated this in a message issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, shortly after Prof. Omoti emerged victorious at the NMA Annual Delegates Conference held in Kano on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
Prof. Omoti secured 253 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Dr. Nosa Lancy Orhue, who polled 143 votes during the election.
In the statement, Okpebholo described Omoti’s emergence as a reflection of professionalism, dedication and years of service within the medical profession.
The governor said the election brought pride to Edo State and further highlighted the quality of professionals produced by the state.
According to him, Prof. Omoti’s contributions to ophthalmology, healthcare administration, research and medical advocacy earned him recognition both within and outside Nigeria.
Okpebholo noted that Omoti’s previous roles, including serving as Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the NMA, Chairman of the National Eye Health Committee and former Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital chapter, prepared him for the national assignment.
The governor also commended the Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Benin for his contributions to medical research and healthcare development.
He stated that Omoti’s participation in international medical conferences and numerous scientific publications reflected his commitment to advancing healthcare standards.
Okpebholo expressed confidence in the new NMA president’s ability to provide effective leadership during his tenure and assured him of the Edo State Government’s support.
