The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has added 600 megawatts to the national grid following the completion of the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line Project in Edo State.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, disclosed this during the commissioning of the project in Edo State on 14, May, 2026
He said the project would improve electricity transmission and strengthen power supply across the country by enhancing the evacuation of generated power from the Ihovbor Transmission Substation.
According to Abdulaziz, the project connected the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line to the Ihovbor substation through two new transmission routes covering about 14 kilometres.
He explained that the development had increased the operational flexibility of the national grid and strengthened electricity delivery within the Benin transmission corridor.
The TCN boss added that the project would enable the company to evacuate more electricity generated from the Azura Power Plant and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company plant.
He noted that the improvement would reduce transmission bottlenecks and allow distribution companies to access more electricity for supply to consumers nationwide.
“With the nation’s grid system, the new transmission line will enable more efficient wheeling of bulk electricity to any part of the country. Power generated from the Benin axis can now easily be wheeled nationwide,” he said.
Abdulaziz stated that the project formed part of TCN’s efforts to build a more reliable and efficient national transmission network.
“Before now, there was power generated without evacuation, but with this project, we can evacuate more power, which means Nigerians will enjoy improved electricity supply,” he added.
The project is expected to strengthen power transmission capacity and improve electricity distribution across several parts of the country.
