The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a police inspector by suspected herdsmen terrorizing motorists and commuters at the Uvwiamuge area of the Ughelli/Agbarho Expressway in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.

State Police Commissioner, Mr Adeyinka Adeleke confirmed the development on Saturday to WARRI TODAY in a telephone chat.

The inspector simply identified as Muhammad was reportedly shot dead on Wednesday when a combined team of security operatives including policemen invaded a suspected hideout of the gunmen inside a forest around the Uvwiamughe community.

The corpse of the deceased who was subsequently declared missing was found on Thursday at the bush.

A gun dwell had ensued between the security operatives and the herdsmen during the raid of the hideout.

The armed wielding herdsmen are said to be operating in the area in connivance with some local community indigenes, and they had been attacking commuters and kidnapping victims plying the highway for ransoms.

But confirming the incident, the state commissioner of police, Adeleke said the police inspector was killed when operatives stormed the criminal hideout to free some kidnapped victims.

According to him, during the rescue operation, the armed wielding gunmen attacked the inspector.

This medium (WARRI TODAY) had reported on Monday that several persons were kidnapped on the road when suspected kidnappers laid siege to the road. It was the third attack in a month by the hoodlums.

The Police Commissioner said, “They went to rescue some NNPC officials that were kidnapped in the incident you claimed several persons were kidnapped. They went to rescue the victims.

“It was during the rescue that the inspector died. They were two. They went to rescue them inside the bush and it was in the course of the rescue that he died.”

When, however, asked if any of the bandits was arrested, the Delta police boss, “We are still investigating.”
