The Bayelsa State Government has dismissed reports claiming it plans to relocate the College of Health Sciences of the Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, describing the speculation as false and without any basis.
The government said Governor Douye Diri had neither approved nor considered any proposal to move the college from its current location on Wilberforce Island in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, the government described the rumour as a fabrication from the “contorted imagination” of those spreading it.
According to the statement, there is no plan before the government to relocate the institution, contrary to claims circulating on social media and other platforms.
The government explained that both the College of Health Sciences at the Niger Delta University and the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) still operate below the admission quotas required to meet the state’s healthcare manpower needs.
It noted that relocating the college would disrupt academic activities, affect medical students and undermine the progress already recorded by both institutions.
The state government urged individuals and groups fuelling the rumour to stop spreading misinformation capable of creating unnecessary tension and disturbing the peace of the state.
It also warned that anyone found deliberately circulating false information, particularly on social media, would face the full weight of the law.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening tertiary education and expanding medical training in Bayelsa, assuring students, staff and residents that there was no policy or decision to relocate the College of Health Sciences from Amassoma.
