The preferred candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the speakership and deputy positions of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and Mr Idris Wase have emerged the new speaker and deputy speaker respectively.

Gbajabiamila, who is the immediate past Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, defeated his opponent, Mr Umar Bago, also of the APC to emerged winner.

About 358 lawmakers voted. .

He is the longest-serving lawmaker in the House, represents Surulere constituency 1 of Lagos State.

Bago was endorsed by the speakership position by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) though he is a member of the APC.

The Clerk of the National Assembly (CNA), who announced the results said Gbajabiamila polled 281 votes to defeat Bago who scored 76 votes.

One vote was, however, annulled.

Meanwhile, Wase was elected as deputy speaker unopposed.
