The Human Rights Association has endorsed Lagos State Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, for the 2027 governorship election ahead of the All Progressives Congress primary slated for May 2026.
The endorsement was contained in a statement issued by the association’s chairman, Saad Kassis-Mohamed, and released over the weekend in Cape Town, South Africa.
Kassis-Mohamed said the decision was based on a “principled assessment” of Hamzat’s track record in governance and his commitment to evidence-based and people-centred administration.
He commended the deputy governor for his contributions to infrastructure development, science and technology, and institutional reforms in Lagos State.
According to him, Hamzat’s leadership style reflects a focus on service delivery and addressing the needs of residents in the state.
“Lagos requires a governor who understands that infrastructure, economic access and civic dignity are not separate agendas. They are one agenda. Dr Hamzat has demonstrated this,” he said.
The association, however, clarified that the endorsement does not amount to political alignment, stressing its independence as a human rights body.
It added that the APC primary involves multiple aspirants, noting that the final decision rests with party members and the electorate.
The group also pledged to continue monitoring governance outcomes and engaging stakeholders on key issues, including urban governance, public health, labour rights and civic participation.
