Democracy Day: Leadership Is A Sacred Trust, Okowa Tells Politicians

Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has urged political leaders to embrace humility, integrity and accountability, stressing that leadership remains a sacred trust bestowed by the people.

Okowa made the call in a Democracy Day message posted on his social media platforms on Thursday.

The former governor said public office holders must remain committed to improving the lives of citizens and strengthening democratic values.

“On this Democracy Day, we are reminded that leadership is a trust bestowed by the people, one that must be exercised with humility, integrity, and a commitment to improving lives.

“Happy Democracy Day,” he stated.

Although brief, the message underscored themes that defined Okowa’s administration during his eight years as governor of Delta State, where he consistently advocated people-centred governance and inclusive development.

Political observers say the former governor’s emphasis on humility, integrity and service reflects the governance philosophy that shaped his “Prosperity for All Deltans” and later “Stronger Delta” development agendas.

During his tenure, Okowa repeatedly maintained that democracy must translate into tangible benefits for citizens through policies that improve living standards and expand economic opportunities.

The former governor had on several occasions argued that democratic governance should be measured not only by electoral processes but also by the ability of governments to deliver meaningful dividends to the people.

His Democracy Day message comes amid heightened political activities in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Okowa, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress alongside Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other political stakeholders in the state, is widely believed to be positioning for a return to the National Assembly as the APC’s Delta North Senatorial candidate.

The former senator, who represented Delta North before becoming governor, has continued to enjoy support from several political leaders and stakeholders across the Anioma nation who have urged him to return to the Senate.

Observers believe his latest Democracy Day message may also serve as a subtle signal of the themes likely to dominate his political engagements ahead of the 2027 elections.
