Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) says the company lost about 11,000 barrels of crude oil daily to pipeline vandalism across the Niger Delta region in 2018.
It valued the 11,000 barrels of crude at N202 Million.
This was disclosed by SPDC’s General Manager, External Relations, Mr Igo Weli, on Monday during a media parley on Shell Pepiline Right of Way in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Weli said the activities of vandals and oil theft pose serious danger to the Niger Delta environment.
He noted that Shell as reputable organization has removed no fewer than 1,160 illegal crude oil theft point in the region.
According to him, “Crude oil theft on the pipeline network resulted in a loss of around 11,000 barrels per day in 2018. SPDC had removed more than 1,160 illegal theft points on its joint venture pipelines in the Niger-Delta.

“As a responsible organisation, we put safety first and have constantly appeal to those involved in oil theft in the Niger-Delta to stop destroying their own land and heritage from the spill and pollution arising from their activities”
On the perceived involvement of Shell’s internal collaborators in oil theft on its assets, Weli said, “No evidence to support the insinuation. The ingenuity and creativity of Nigerians are never in doubt, sometimes it is just what it is applied to, that is the problem”
