Omo-Agege Joins NDC Days After Dumping APC, Eyes Delta Central Senate Race

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President of the Senate

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially joined the National Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring his intention to contest for the Delta Central Senatorial seat on the platform of the party.

Omo-Agege’s defection comes barely six days after he resigned from the All Progressives Congress, in a move already generating ripples across Delta State’s political landscape.

The former governorship candidate made the announcement in a personally signed statement issued on Thursday, where he said his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates, supporters and stakeholders within and outside Delta State.

According to him, the consultations revealed a growing demand among Deltans for accountable leadership and effective representation.

“Today, I formally announce my decision to join the National Democratic Congress,” the Obarisi of Urhoboland stated.

He explained that the NDC offered a credible platform built on inclusion, transparency, grassroots participation and true federalism, adding that the party represented the best alternative for Delta State and Nigeria.

Omo-Agege also confirmed that he would work closely with the party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 elections.

The former Deputy Senate President expressed appreciation to key NDC leaders, including Senator Seriake Dickson, Senator Moses Cleopas, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Obi for engaging him during the process leading to his defection.

Speaking on his planned return to the National Assembly, Omo-Agege said the decision was in response to persistent calls from constituents in Delta Central who wanted him back in the Senate.

“This is not about me. This is about the mandate you entrusted to me in 2019 and the renewed call from our people for my return to the Senate to provide effective representation,” he said.

He criticised the state of infrastructure and public services in Delta State despite huge revenues accruing to the state over the years.

According to him, many communities still suffer from failed roads, poor healthcare facilities, inadequate schools and rising unemployment.

“Right now, too much of Delta’s wealth sits in CBN accounts while our people suffer from bad roads, collapsed hospitals, and abandoned communities. This is not governance. It is a failure of leadership and a betrayal of public trust,” he declared.

Omo-Agege vowed to push for fair allocation of federal projects, job creation, improved healthcare, support for small businesses and greater accountability in the management of public funds if elected.

He also pledged to strengthen the NDC structure across Delta State from the ward level ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I know what it takes to build a political structure and make it competitive in Delta State. We did it before for the APC when many said it was impossible,” he said.

The former lawmaker further disclosed that the NDC would field candidates for the governorship and other elective positions in Delta State as part of efforts to reposition the state and the country.

Calling on youths, women and traditional rulers to actively participate in the political process, Omo-Agege described 2027 as a defining moment for Delta State and Nigeria.

“The work starts now. The time is now. The people are ready,” he added.
