Late Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, HRM Obi (Prof) Chukwuka Okonjo flanked by his wife, and former minister of finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

The traditional ruler of Ogwashi Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, His Royal Majesty, Obi (Prof) Chukwuka Okonjo, is dead.

Obi Okonjo was the father of the former Coordinating Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The monarch died at the age of 91 in the United States of America.

He was a professor of mathematics before he ascended the revered Ogwashi-Uku throne in 2007.

It was gathered that the traditional ruler was said to have joined his ancestors for some with weeks but was kept from public knowledge as a result of traditional rites needed to be performed.

Ogwashi-Uku houses the Delta State Polytechnic. It is one of the polytechnics established by the administration of former Governor James Ibori.

However, it was gathered that a new traditional ruler has emerged and had been crowned as part of traditional rites in the ancient kingdom.

The new monarch, Ifechukwude Chukuka Okonjo, is a financial management expert and CEO of Chevy Chase Consulting.

The processes include the new Obi’s endorsement and presentation by the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of Ogwashi-Uku and the traditional chalking and crowning ceremonies conducted by the Ikelike and Agidiehi Kingmakers in Ogwashi Uku.

The new Obi, who also worked for Halliburton Nigeria, attended Federal Government College, Enugu.

He obtained his A’ levels as an external student of the University of London before proceeding to United States of America where he bagged two degrees in Economics and History from University of Maryland, College Park and an MBA from University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

He is pursuing a doctorate in Business Administration from University of Paris, in France.
