The Edo State Police Command has concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop for police officers aimed at improving investigative procedures, statement-taking techniques and human rights compliance within the command.

The training programme, held in Benin City recently, brought together Divisional Crime Officers (DCOs) and other investigative personnel from different divisions across the state.

Speaking during the workshop, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, Grace Longe, said the training was organised to expose officers to modern trends in criminal justice administration and global policing standards.

According to her, the initiative was designed to equip officers with contemporary investigative skills and improve professionalism in the handling of suspects and criminal cases.

“The training is to bring officers up to speed with global best practices and embrace current trends in criminal justice systems,” she said.

The workshop focused on ethical interrogation methods, proper statement-taking procedures, suspect handling, documentation and lawful investigation techniques.

One of the participants, Ayo Faliyimu, said the training had broadened his understanding of investigative procedures and professional policing.

“I’ve learnt a lot from this workshop and I’m going back to dissect everything to my colleagues so that the Nigeria Police Force can be the type of police force Nigerians deserve,” he said.

Another participant, Janet Oniyaumebi, noted that the training exposed officers to better ways of handling suspects while respecting their rights during investigations.

“I learnt a lot. I now know how to take care of my suspect, how to interrogate them, and how to give them their rights. I now know how to go about taking statements properly,” she stated.

The Edo State Police Command said the training formed part of ongoing efforts to improve investigative efficiency, strengthen public trust and align policing operations with international standards and human rights practices.
